Workshop One- Fossil Free Kwantlen Event

For the next few weeks, we will be posting more information about the workshops for the Fossil Free Kwantlen: Moving Towards Renewable Energy event. We'll start off with workshop one, which will take place on March 19th.

Why should we care about the environment?- This workshop provides a quick overview on the necessity of sustainability, the overall human damage on the environment here in British Columbia and the world, as well as some further reasons as to why we should care for the environment. This gives some strong background knowledge as to why the environmentalist movement is happening, and why it is necessary to start thinking about the world around us.

A Quick Update

Hey everyone! Just a quick update on what we have been up to. Right now, we have been primarily focusing on the big Renewable Energy event that we will be having. We'll be working in conjunction with Kwantlen Fossil Free with myself and Inderpal taking the reigns for this project. The event will be from March 19th and 20th, and we will be having workshops, a panel, as well as a keynote speaker (names will be announced shortly).

We'll also be starting to interview some of the companies and people that will be a part of this event. That will happen shortly, and the articles will be posted on this blog. Here are some links to follow while leading up to the event.

Conclusion to E-Recycling

For the past month or so, we have focused on E-recycling. We learned about what it is, the health risks, as well as the effects of E-waste on the environment. We also met up with Nigel from Free Geek, and we had a great interview with him (Part two still coming!).

For the next month, we will shift our focus to our big event in March. We’ll also be telling you about some other events that we are affiliated with, as well as we will continue to focus on interviewing local companies and organizations in British Columbia. We will also begin to interview the panelists, companies, and organizations that will be at our renewable energy event in March.

We also want to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season! =)

Interview with Nigel from Free Geek-Part 1

I had the pleasure to go to Free Geek Vancouver to see this awesome and  progressive non-profit. As I came in to the building at 1820 Pandora St, Vancouver, BC V5L 1M5 and as walked into the door, I saw the store. My eyes immediately lit up, and the consumer was screaming at seeing the prices of this Mac laptop that was only $150 dollars. As I was waiting for Nigel for the interview; I could not believe all the junk people throw out and how Free Geek turned it into something useful. Seems like they are following the old phrase of turning nothing into something, and I pinched myself that all these laptops, chargers and DVDs were at one time labelled as junk or waste of old electronics. But, Free Geek used this junk and turned it into something brand new.
